Even though Mauritius is more developed than the neighbouring island of Madagascar, it continues to have pockets of poverty. Poverty is often interlinked with drugs and alcohol abuse. With rapid economic and technological change, economic gaps are being created. Social evils such as drug trafficking and domestic violence are stumbling blocks to their growth as a harmonious society.
The Mothers’ Union is supporting struggling families; they provide uniforms for children who wouldn’t otherwise go to school. Schooling is free in Mauritius; but having a uniform is the last remaining barrier to entry.
Mothers’ Union Mauritius runs a five-week evening course for married couples creating a safe environment where they can share experiences with other couples and discuss issues such as communication and resolving conflict.
The ‘Outgate’ project in Mauritius supports the reintegration of women prisoners, who are first offenders, with their families and into society after their sentence has finished. The project acts as a bridge between the prison and the community helping support the women by raising their self-esteem, providing relationship support to the whole family, and providing vocational skills to help them find work upon release.
Funded by the Mauritius government, Mothers’ Union is the leading NGO on the project, working in collaboration with Prison Fellowship Mauritius for its implementation. The project is currently supporting 26 prisoners and their families.
In 2014 Mothers’ Union in Mauritius celebrated their 90th anniversary with the motto “In faith we serve and sow the future together”. In the same year the Diocese celebrated their 160th anniversary with the theme “Together in faith we serve”.
Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion; Which cannot be moved, but abides forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds His people from this time forth and forever. Psalm 125:1-2
